As the Divisional Series of the MLB playoffs got started Tuesday, the National League saw two games which both ended in close fashion.
The first game of the afternoon saw the Wild Card-winning upset the Braves thanks to a flurry of runs in the third through fifth innings. Despite a comeback attempt from the Braves, they ran out of time and the Phillies took a 1-0 series lead.
Meanwhile on the opposite coast, the grudge match between the Dodgers and Padres stayed close in the late innings, with maintaining their 5-3 lead all the way to the end.

By the top of the third, a solo shot from Travis d'Arnaud made it a one-run game.

However, the Phillies went on to score five unanswered runs across the next three innings to take a 7-1 lead.
An Alec Bohm sac fly scored J.T. Realmuto to make it 3-1 in the top of the third. Later in the same inning, Jean Segura's single scored Nick Castellanos. Castellanos went up to bat again in the top of the fourth, scoring Rhys Hoskins and Edmundo Sosa to make the lead 6-1.

Sosa stepped up once again to score the last run of the game for the Phillies, bringing Segura home to extend the lead to 7-1.
The Braves immediately began responding - with d'Arnaud adding two RBIs to his tally by scoring Willy Contreras and Matt Olson to make it a 7-3 game. Olson himself blasted a three-run home run to cut the deficit to 7-6. However, a fantastic play by Castellanos and a d'Arnaud groundout ended the game there.
Phillies reliever Seranthony Dominguez pitched two innings, rikvip club striking out three, and giving up none en route to being credited with the win. Meanwhile, Atlanta starter Max Fried was charged with the loss after three-and-a-third innings of pitching yielded four runs for Philadelphia.

Out west later in the day, the San Diego Padres were looking to exact revenge for the 2020 NLDS on the team that beat them - the hated Dodgers.
It did not start well for San Diego - as starter Mike Clevinger gave up a home run to Trea Turner and allowed Max Muncy to drive in a run in another run to make it a 2-0 game at the end of the first inning.
LA kept piling on the runs by adding three more in the third inning. Catcher Will Smith brought Turner home on a double, with Smith later coming home thanks to a double from Gavin Lux.
Trayce Thompson - younger brother of the NBA's Klay - smacked the ball in a way that caused first baseman Will Myers to make an error. That scored Muncy from third and made things worse for San Diego as the scoreline read 5-0.
Trea Turner hit an early home run to set the tone as the Dodgers went on to win 5-3 in Game 1
But, the Padres dug deep and found some runs in the top of the fifth. Myers made up for his mistake by hitting a solo shot. A Trent Grisham groundout allowed Jake Cronenworth to score from third. Kim Ha-Seong scored from third after tagging up on a sac fly.

Momentum may have briefly swung toward San Diego, but the Dodgers' superior pitching prevented any more damage and led to them closing it out with a 5-3 win.
LA's Julio Urias got the win despite giving up four hits and three earned runs across five innings of pitching. But, this game was about surviving early on and Clevinger didn't do that. He was pulled after giving up four earned runs on six hits, leaving with an embarrassing 13.50 ERA.
All four teams play again on Thursday night.
